Message from the President

Welcome to the Dustin Smith Heart Foundation, in memory of my brother Dr. Dustin Arthur Smith, who passed away from sudden cardiac death, from complications from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy on Valentine’s Day, 2015.

Founded in April 2015 our objective is to raise money to educate and raise public awareness of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and to raise money for research on sudden cardiac death, which can affect HCM-patients at any point in their lives.  HCM affects 1 in 500 people, and is a leading cause of sudden cardiac death in the young.

When Dustin was diagnosed with HCM, we thought we were fortunate. We found the disease before it struck unexpectedly, as it does with so many young athletes. Dustin was on medication, had a very healthy lifestyle, was meeting with Doctors, and up-to-date on all the latest HCM research. Dustin was weighing the pros and cons to surgery of an ICD, when he died of SCD.  Given Dustin’s health/age, he had a very-low risk of SCD of 3.6% and a higher likelihood of false shocks with the ICD.  As a result, he chose not to rush into the surgery.  In hindsight, we all wish he had the ICD, although even that does not guarentee he would be with us today.  What we basically know, is that the heart is a mystery, and HCM is an even greater mystery.

Please consider donating to our foundation.  Dustin lived life, each day and each year to the fullest, prioritizing his family, friends and education.  Although his family and friends are heartbroken, over losing Dustin at age 31, we are thankful that we got an additional ten years (from when he was diagnosed) and believe that “Every Year Matters”.  We hope our foundation overtime will help reduce the risk of SCD in individuals with HCM, so that they can enjoy many more years with their family and friends.
